Oakland Raiders sign Perez Ford as undrafted free agent

The standup defensive end will get his chance with an NFL squad, almost certainly as an outside backer.

Perez Ford has signed a contract with the Oakland Raiders.

As you might already be aware, Ford projects well as a deeper on the depth-chart backer, so Oakland's 3-4 defense could be a great place for him to get some snaps after some work. Another MAC stalwart, Khalil Mack, is already thriving.

You'll see a few things if you watch these highlights of Ford. For one, the 6'0" 230-pounder is pretty nimble for his position. Playing a standup defensive end/hybrid backer type, Ford's movements are not wasted. He does an excellent job setting up opposing offensive linemen with his footwork and dipping his shoulder to avoid the hands of bigger opponents. With a top end 4.67 40-time, it makes sense to give Ford a chance to work as an outside backer, and the Raiders likely feel good about his upside.

This past season, Ford was a first team All-MAC selection at DE. He sacked opposing QBs 5 times and racked up 6.5 tackles for loss. Here is his bio from NIU's athletic site.

We'll see how it plays out for Ford, who joins a team who generally is considered to have had a decent draft.
