Former South Dakota State DB Jordan Gandy commits to NIU

The defensive backfield for the Northern Illinois Huskies got a little bit deeper yesterday as Jordan Gandy, a defensive back at South Dakota State, announced that he will be transferring to NIUvia Twitter. A local product out of DeKalb, Ill., he was productive as a freshman for the Jackrabbits last season with eight tackles, an interception, and a pass break-up.

As you can see in hisHudl highlights, he has some tools that can be an asset to the Huskies. He demonstrates good ball skills as well as shows the ability to be a solid tackler in the secondary. If he’s able to develop physically and bring some physicality to the back end of the defense, Gandy has a high ceiling at NIU.

Gandy was a three-time all-area selection, and a two-time all-state honoree in his high school career at DeKalb (IL) HS, finishing his senior season with 108 tackles, 9 pass breakups, 2 interceptions and 2 forced fumbles. Gandy was an unranked recruit in the Class of 2019,per Rivals.

As far as how Gandy will fit in on the roster, the Huskies have only three upperclassmen in the defensive backfield in 2020, so it’s certainly possible that he could compete for a starting job in 2021 when he’s ready and/or eligible. As for right now, learning the defense and adding to his physical skillset would put him in prime position to compete and make the team better.
